CJ Gill PLUS! [total : 9 comment(s) to this image]
That is why, the PLUS was never built alongside the railway tracks...

PLUS was an alternative and to expand the transport network in Malaysia...

By efficiency, PLUS has achieved its purpose to link major towns faster than by rail....

The ball is now...in the Railway Administration, and what double-tracking can really provide to the masses.

In Malaysia, it's economical to travel by rail or bus, as compared to driving (over long distances...and toll fees can kill you)...but public transport restricts you from getting to places without them....

But i will admire KTMB over bus services... it has no "ULAT TIKET"...

To get a good train service... right time arriving & departure....high speed for a distance intercity & state by train surely it takes time for KTMB to serve all that to us . For me KTM service is better then before and we should be proud of it .

CJ Gill Focus and Projection [total : 9 comment(s) to this image]
Honestly, no matter what our professions are, if we are not willing to accept criticism positively...then, the road to progress will be a long one.

In the business world today where to find one's niche is to be competitively viable... there should be a more effective way, in any Government-linked projects...Malaysia has done fairly well if you look at it in a certain perspective. The ability to tap new resources has helped its progress in many ways.

It has relations to how it reflects the system of governance, directly.

This is the asset of the Malaysian Government when dealing with many other mega projects...The soft-approach and friendly atmosphere it created...could be perceived as pessimistic to some quarters....even huge capital losses to a certain extent.

He's expecting a 'shinkansen/tgv-like' train service. That's all I can say.

Nevertheless, I totally disagree with the author about reconstructing new building at Butterworth terminus but 100% agreed about reconstructing new toilets at the terminus. Hehehe...

Then again, I support the idea of having KTMB bosses occasionally ride onboard on an intercity train just to make sure that everything that spent in million ringgit is on the right track.

CJ Gill Not uncommon [total : 12 comment(s) to this image]
Throughout the world this is a not uncommon occurrence. Perhaps it is less common in Malaysia due to the relatively low speed of the Komuter trains and the relatively short distance of wired track. Foreign objects getting tangled in the wires is one cause - when a moving train arrives at that point something has to give - better the wire than the train. A faulty/broken pantograph could also be a cause. Another cause which wouldn't happen in Malaysia is a build up of ice in cold weather - the extra weight of the ice makes a huge difference. An extremely strong wind is yet another possibility. I have a friend who is a quality engineer on railways, I'll ask him if his remit includes overhead wiring. He wrote the quality documentation for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and is currently contracted to London Undergroud.
A couple of months ago the same thing happened on our local metro line here (also metre-gauge). I happened to be waiting for the next train and ended up being bussed along to the next section so I could get into the city. When I came back later in the day the breakdown train had arrived and repairs were in progress. Being a single track line another train was trapped beyond the incident all day!

Even thought the instrument is not sophisticated like the flight deck .Training a few years at Sentul b4 he get a licence to sit in the Cab . Beware for any kind potential danger ahead such as Landslide, Human & Animal crossing on the track .
The safety of the passenger is the first priority when hauling the passenger coaches .

charkoewteow Electrical fires [total : 8 comment(s) to this image]
Not related to this particular news article, electrical fires are normally caused by a short-circuit in the wiring layout. As electric cables aged, the insulation and the conductor core gets oxidized....

Vibrations and movements will result to a short-circuit (live wire in contact with the neutral or earth) ...this will result to overheating, arcing and eventually electrical sparks....

Combined with dried combustible materials like oil or grease....then you'll get disaster.

New locomotives are equipped with high-end and sensitive circuit breakers monitored by computers. Many has on-board smoke or heat detectors placed within specific compartments in the engine room that will monitor and trigger the alarms.

If the double tracking from Tjg Pagar - Padang Besar is materialised, then these express buses have to compete with trains if KTMB installed some high-speed trains along the route. If it runs on a commercial normal speed of 160km/h, Tjg Pagar - KL: about 2-3 hours, Tjg Pagar - Butterworth : aroound 5-6 hours, Tjg Pagar - Padang Beso : Roughly 7-8 hours including of stoppage at stations along the way. If a direct express which only stops at 8 major station ie: Tjg Pagar-JB-Seremban-KL-Ipoh-Butterworth-Alor Setaq-Padang Besar, the time can be hugely decreases.

...that SM 12 will have a very tight turnaround time if at all if it were to extend to Butterworth. I estimate an ETA of around 2PM at Butterworth, and it will have to turn south immediately to keep the timing for SM 11. One delay anywhere along the Northbound journey will echo quite bad ...

charkoewteow Translation... [total : 8 comment(s) to this image]
Here goes....haven't done this for some time:
(Try to be in context when you read them)

Bukit Mertajam - A 22 class locomotive driver of the Malayan Railways Limited (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad - KTMB) managed to save his life, after a fire broke out in the locomotive's engine room when it caught fire at Penanti, near here yesterday.

The incident happened at around 2 am when the locomotive was hauling a 'container train' en route from Prai to Padang Besar, Bukit Kayu Hitam.

Bukit Mertajam Fire Station's Duty Officer Rohana Mustafa said, they received a call at 2.01 am and 8 firemen arrived at the scene at 2.20 am in a fire engine.
The firemen used 8 lengths of connected hose-reels attached to the fire engine as the locomotive was inaccessible and located a distance away.

Rohana also said, the fire was put under control at about 2.50 am and it was totally put off at 5 am. The Fire Dept had to detach the locomotive away to prevent fire from spreading and destroy its 'container cargo'.
It was a challenging task for the firemen as that location was full of "wires".

At this point of time, the fire department has not establish the cause of fire and the cost of damage.

KTMB's Corporate Communications Executive Shahriza Embi when contacted in Kuala Lumpur said, the locomotive involved has "2 heads" and the fire broke out in the engine room 'in the rear'.

Shahriza said, the locomotive driver was operating in the leading end. He stopped the train after realizing that fire had broke out in the locomotive rear compartment.

Shahriza also said, the damaged locomotive was separated and sent to Penanti Station where the fire was eventually put off.

If given a choice of ER2 or SM12 to Butterworth, I'll take SM12, if timetable arrival in Butterworth is about 3pm or earlier. But Penang has lesser attractions than KL. One way is to promote Penang food for more tourists to visit the island. :p
